Chapter 12

STAN eyed Cat as she tossed back her eighth shot of tequila. She chased the firewater down with a swig of her beer. A few guys nearby cast her hungry gazes, probably thinking her inebriated state made her an easy target. He moved closer, making sure they knew he protected her.

Her hand closed over Stan’s knee. Warmth spread up his thigh. “You love me…don’t you, honey?”

Beautiful, you have no idea.

When he didn’t immediately answer, she frowned and signaled to the bartender for another drink.

Stan grabbed her waving wrist. At this rate, he’d have to toss her over his shoulder and carry her out using a firefighter’s lift. “Cat, I’m cutting you off.”

“Like hell.” She twisted out of his grip. With a grimace on her face, she slammed the empty glass on the bar. “Another shot. Make it a double.” Stan caught the server’s gaze and shook his head. He gave the signal for one. The man nodded.

While the bartender poured her drink, she grabbed a few cherries out of the holder in front of her. She popped one in her mouth. “I can tie a knot with my tongue. Want to see?” She waggled her brows.

Stan couldn’t help but flash a grin. “Sure, beautiful.”

Evan came over to them. “I’m getting out of here. If I don’t get a solid eight of beauty sleep, I’m useless.”

“Me too,” Paige added. “Deadline is looming. Besides, if I’m going to shoot the calendar for you, I have to tie up everything here.” She handed Stan a piece of paper. “You hold on to this. This is my home number and my new address. I moved a month ago—I’m not sure if she has it. She’s too toasted to ask. I’ll set something up for next week. Tell her to call me at home. I work out of there more than the office.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll make sure she gets it. I’ve never seen her so wasted. I’ll have to carry her out of here.”

Paige frowned. “Be gentle with her, big guy. She’s had a tough time. That asshole Darren really screwed her over.”

“I will, but—” There seemed like more to the story.

“Not my tale to tell, handsome.”

Stan nodded. He glanced over at Cat. Warmth filled him each time he saw her.

“You’re good for her. She needs someone to take care of her instead of the other way around for a change.” Paige gave him an unexpected hug. “She doesn’t drink like this often, but when she does, she goes all the way. Get her home. Oh, and she has a tendency to retch like a champion when she drinks.”

Stan’s head fell back, but it didn’t matter all that much to him. He’d clean up whatever mess she made.

“Come on, sis, I’ll drop you home. You ain’t driving tonight, you lush.” Paige frowned at Evan. She didn’t argue. Evan stuck out his hand to Stan. “Take care of her.”

Stan gripped it tight. “I will.”

“Talk to you soon, Cat.” Cat offered Evan a grunt. He rolled his eyes.
